I’ll reach out via text or email to confirm that I can complete your project and give you some examples/options for what I’m thinking will be possible, given your budget and other notes that you provided in the form. We’ll talk more about total price at this stage.

I’ll also ask for your measurements & tell you how to take those measurements.

Once we land on a plan, I’ll require a $160 deposit via Venmo or Zelle. (If your project is less than $160, you’ll pay in full)

Once I finish, I’ll reach back out to let you know how much shipping costs and you’ll pay that along with the remainder of the price of your item.

I’ll knit items on a first-come-first-served basis. Production time ranges from 3 weeks to 8 weeks and I’ll give you a heads up on approximately where your item is in the queue. Please note: if I need to place an order for your yarn, your production time may take a little longer.

How much does a commission cost? Total prices for labor + lowest cost yarn start at: Vest/Tank ($160+) Tee ($160+) Hat/Beanie/Beret ($50+) Sweater ($250+) Cardigan ($270+) Baby/Toddler Garment ($125+). This price may increase depending on the yarn and your garment size.
How does Doing Laundry price commissions? Items are priced as labor (fixed; not negotiable) + yarn (very negotiable; we’ll choose yarn based on your budget). When you submit your form, I’ll tell you the labor cost and we will chat through yarn cost based on your budget. Labor is calculated at $10/hr. (Yes, that is lower than my city’s minimum wage of $17/hr. Yes, this is the only way people will commit to a custom piece—it gets expensive. Yes, I will gladly take a higher wage if you have the means to do so—just let me know, and thank you very much!) Please note that larger sizes = higher cost, due to the longer time it takes me to make it, as well as the higher cost of more yarn. When I sell my collections and ready-made garments, price is the same across all sizes. However, for commissions, there are SO many more variables and this is a custom piece for your body. For months, I’ve tried to map out how a size-inclusive commission process would work, but unfortunately, this here is what works for now. I appreciate your understanding and please send me any feedback you have.
Is there anything you’d really love knitting? I love making “scrappy” sweaters, like my Habitat Vests. I’d say that’s the Doing Laundry signature. If you want something loud or a little more experimental, those are my absolute favorite. I also love working with variegated and color gradient yarns—if fiber quality is what you’re most excited about, there are dozens of hand-dyed yarn brands that I can recommend. I’ll love you forever if that’s something you’d like to invest in because those yarns are an absolute joy to work with! Take a look at my Commissions Guide to see some yarn & project examples.
Are there any projects you’d turn down? It depends! Things like cable knit sweaters or intricate colorwork details (like fair isle) are much more labor intensive and will drastically increase cost—I would absolutely love to knit them, but be prepared for a $650+ price tag, because those will likely take me about 65 hours. Similarly, things with lots of shapes/color blocks (like, for example, a recognizable cartoon character or exact logo) will be more expensive, and we’d have to talk more.
When will you offer commissions again? I’m not sure! Definitely not until January 2027 at the earliest, but we’ll see how this round goes. Sign up for my newsletter and keep an eye out on Instagram.
